According to data from BPS – Statistic Indonesia, after declining due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2023, the number of Italian tourists to Indonesia surpassed the pre-pandemic figure, rising from 91,229 visitors in 2019 to 104,339 in 2023.
The most visited locations are the islands of Bali and Lombok and the archaeological and natural sites of Java, with special emphasis on the cities of Yogyakarta and Solo, the sacred complexes of Borobudur and Prambanan, and the volcanic areas of Mount Bromo and the Ijen Plateau. Other major destinations include marine tourism and diving areas in Flores-Komodo Nature Park and the Sulawesi, Raja Ampat, Moluccas archipelagos.
Regarding the flow of Indonesian tourism to foreign countries, western European countries continue to be popular tourist destinations for Indonesian travelers, and Italy is already a popular destination for the Indonesian population due to the attractiveness of Made in Italy and especially the fashion, clothing, design and gastronomy sectors. After a downturn due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of Indonesian tourists to Italy has returned to an upward trend.
