ITALY AND UK AMBASSADORS MEET THE TWO YOUNG INDONESIAN REPRESENTATIVES WHO WILL TAKE PART IN THE “YOUTH4CLIMATE: DRIVING AMBITION” EVENT IN MILAN

As Italy prepares to host the “Youth4Climate: Driving Ambition” conference at the end of the month, just before the Pre-COP, Italian Ambassador to Indonesia, H.E. Benedetto Latteri received in his Jakarta residence the two young Indonesians who will fly to Milan to take part in the important event. Also present was the UK Ambassador to Indonesia, H.E. Owen Jenkins, whose Country will host this year’s COP26 in Glasgow.

Selected along with 400 other young people coming from all over the world to attend the “Youth COP”, Mr. Steven Setyawan and Ms. Damayanti Prabasari will make the voice of Indonesian youth be heard in a global discussion that will formulate ideas and advance possible solutions to the challenge of climate change. These ideas and solutions will then be presented to world leaders for their consideration in the framework of the COP26.

In a friendly, relaxed atmosphere, the two youngsters shared with the Italian and British Ambassadors their views on various topics, ranging from how renewable energy can help remote areas of Indonesia access electricity to the impact of nature-based solutions in fighting climate change and providing a source of income for indigenous communities; from the importance of making commodities (like palm oil) and tourism more sustainable to what the youth can do on an individual basis to protect the environment.

The “Youth4Climate: Driving Ambition” event will provide a platform for Steven and Damayanti to further discuss these topics with their peers from all the 197 Countries that are parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. As they aptly pointed out, in Milan they “hope to deliver on expectations, desire and aspirations. This is an era of collaboration, not competition, so let’s unite together to fight climate change and reduce global emissions.”

Both Ambassador Latteri and Ambassador Jenkins were highly impressed with the two Indonesian Youth Representatives’ commitment, preparedness and willingness to offer a concrete contribution to the international discourse on the green transition. Coming from a Country where 50% of the population is under the age of 30, “it is brilliant they will take their ideas to Milan so that the rest of the world will hear what Indonesia has to say”, adding to “the recommendations, momentum and energy of the world leaders event in Glasgow”.

The Italian Minister of Ecological Transition, Mr Roberto Cingolani recently declared that “in Milan young people, our future ruling classes, will speak to Heads of State, Ministers and politicians and make proposals on various themes that will then be brought to COP26. Their way of seeing things is different, more modern, faster, and this will help also us adults because their involvement can be highly instructive. Their proposals will be an exceptional surprise for COP26 “.

As Co-Chair of COP26 and current Chair of the G20, Italy is strongly committed to advance the global agenda against climate change: the Youth COP and Pre-COP in Milan as well as the G20 Summit in Rome will be instrumental in pursuing this goal. As Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said at the “Climate Moment” round table that took place in New York in the margins of the 76th UN General Assembly, “current measures are insufficient to stop the growth of greenhouse gas emissions, the cause of global warming, and decisive actions are needed in the short term, such as the progressive elimination of coal both nationally and internationally […] Many countries, such as Italy, have decided to put a greener and more inclusive growth model at the center of their recovery and resilience plans. However, more needs to be done […] In addition to the mobilization of public resources it is also necessary to mobilize private resources“. Mr Draghi then stated that the upcoming G20 Summit and the COP26 in Glasgow represent “an unmissable opportunity to respond to these challenges and demonstrate our collective determination”.
